The idea for the fragrance crystallized when Oberwetter first encountered immortelle absolute. The Story Behind Warm Bulb

Warm Bulb began with a lamp.

Perfumer Laura Oberwetter wanted to capture the particular quality of light produced by her favorite old lamp, one she took from her father while she was in high school and still keeps on her desk. The lamp heats up quickly, but its warm illumination became closely associated with the comfort of reading in the dark.

While developing another fragrance, Oberwetter encountered immortelle absolute and was immediately distracted by its aroma. To her, it smelled like a warm bulb: dust slowly baking against hot glass.

That observation eventually became Clue’s third fragrance.

Instead of reproducing fire or smoke, Warm Bulb explores the smell of man-made heat. Immortelle is surrounded by hot sandalwood, paper, tobacco, pepper, vanilla, and Clue’s abstract accords of burning dust and heated air.

The result is an olfactory interpretation of something we normally experience through sight and touch: the golden warmth radiating from an old lamp onto the papers and books beneath it.

It is strange, familiar, and deeply nostalgic, precisely the kind of overlooked sensory experience that defines Clue Perfumery’s approach to fragrance.
